A New Sunblock that Doesn’t Penetrate the Skin
Most commercial sunblocks are good at preventing sunburn, but they can go below the skin’s surface and enter the bloodstream. But researchers have developed a new sunblock, made with bioadhesive nanoparticles, that stays on the surface of the skin. Desmoglein 3-Dependent Signaling Regulates Keratinocyte Migration and Wound Healing
Scientists investigated the role of Dsg3-dependent control of p38MAPK function. Dsg3-deficient mice display recurrent spontaneously healing skin erosions. In lesional and perilesional biopsies, p38MAPK activation was detectable compared to control animals. [J Invest Dermatol] Abstract

Melanin Production through Novel Processing of Proopiomelanocortin in the Extracellular Compartment of the Auricular Skin of C57BL/6 Mice after UV-Irradiation
The production of melanin is regulated by α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, which is produced from proopiomelanocortin (POMC). Investigators focused on the expression of POMC and POMC-derived peptides after ultraviolet (UV)-irradiation. [Sci Rep] Full Article

MiR-330-5p Inhibits Proliferation and Migration of Keratinocyte by Targeting Pdia3 Expression
The authors found that microRNA (miR)-330-5p inhibited the proliferation and migration of mouse keratinocytes. Among the candidate target genes of miR-330-5p searched using microarray analysis, they found that the expression of Pdia3 was directly regulated by miR-330-5p in the mouse keratinocyte. Vigilant Keratinocytes Trigger PAMP Signaling in Response to Streptococcal M1 Protein
Researchers showed that keratinocytes recognize soluble M1 protein, a streptococcal virulence factor, as a PAMP to release alarming inflammatory responses. They found that this interaction initiates an inflammatory intracellular signaling cascade involving the activation of mitogen-activated kinases, ERK, p38 and JNK, and the subsequent induction and mobilization of the transcription factors NF-κB and AP-1. Extensive Hair-Shaft Elongation by Isolated Mouse Whisker Follicles in Very Long-Term Gelfoam® Histoculture

Development of Chitosan/Poly-γ-Glutamic Acid/Pluronic/Curcumin Nanoparticles in Chitosan Dressings for Wound Regeneration.
The authors report a curcumin nanoparticle with a tripolymeric composite that can be used as a delivery device for wound healing. In vitro analyses indicated controlled curcumin release in a simulated skin tissue model. [J Biomed Mater Res B Appl Biomater] Abstract


AP2α Controls the Dynamic Balance between miR-126&126* and miR-221&222 during Melanoma Progression
Scientists demonstrated the responsibility of the circuitry connecting the oncomiR-221&222 with the tumor suppressors miR-126&126* in melanoma development and progression. [Oncogene] Full Article

Secreted Frizzled-Related Protein 2 (sFRP2) Functions as a Melanogenic Stimulator; The Role of sFRP2 in UV-Induced Hyperpigmentary Disorders
To investigate the effect of sFRP2 on melanogenesis, normal human melanocytes were infected with sFRP2-lentivirus or sh-sFRP2. Scientists found that sFRP2 stimulates melanogenesis through MITF/tyrosinase upregulation via β-catenin signaling. [J Invest Dermatol] Abstract

The Influence of Sun Exposure on the DNA Methylation Status of MMP9, miR-137, KRT14 and KRT19 Genes in Human Skin
Researchers investigated the sun exposure influence on the DNA methylation profile on the matrix metalloprotease-9 (MMP9), microRNA 137 (miR-137), cytokeratin 14 (KRT14) and 19 (KRT19) genes of skin cells of subjects with no history of skin diseases. [Eur J Dermatol] Abstract
